Violet E. Davis, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 22, 1998, at Lincoln County Hospital Long Term Care Unit.
She was born Dec. 11, 1912, in Kansas City, the daughter of Jacob and Ethel (Allen) Tanner. Due to their mother's illness, Violet and her brother Carl were sent by train to Denmark to be raised by foster parents Edward and Ella (Parsons) Burkepile. She attended the Malone School at Denmark for eight years and then she was needed to help at home.
On Sept. 14, 1934, she married Quintin R. Harlow of Ash Grove. Five children were born to this union. They made their home on a farm in the Ash Grove community until moving to Lincoln in 1941.
She was later united in marriage with Earl Davis of Osborne on April 28, 1960. They lived in Great Bend, Cawker City, and Downs. Earl died on April 26, 1969, and she moved back to Lincoln in 1974.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church and the VFW Auxiliary, both of Lincoln. She was an 11-year member of the Denmark 4-H club, spent 21 years in restaurant work, and at the age of 64, took a nurse's aide course. She worked for the Downs nursing home and at Mid-America Nursing Center, Lincoln. After her retirement, she volunteered many hours at Mid-America and the VFW Auxiliary store. She spent the last year and a half at Lincoln County Hospital Long Term Care.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her foster parents; her husband Earl; a brother, Raymond Tanner; a granddaughter; a step-daughter; a step-granddaughter; and a great-grandson.
Survivors include three sons, Bob Harlow and wife Marilyn, San Mateo, Calif., Ray Harlow and wife Dawn, Lincoln, and Bill Harlow and wife Janiss, Lucas; two daughters, Ethel and husband Bob Zachgo, and Marjorie and husband Bob McGee, all of Lincoln; a stepson, Wilbur Davis and wife Alta, Lucas; a brother, Carl Tanner and wife Pearl; 16 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, 1998, in the Lincoln Evangelical Church.
