CARBONDALE Vernon D. Berkley, 80, Carbondale, Kansas, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, November 23, 2010, at his home. He was born May 22, 1930, at Shady Bend, Kansas, the son of Fred W. and Ruth Rittgers Berkley.

He graduated from Tescott High School in 1948. He worked at the Tescott Bank following high School, before entering the United States Air Force, where he served as a Staff Sergeant.

He married Shirley Maxine Werries, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Tescott, Kansas, March 18, 1951. They moved back to Tescott, following his military service where he farmed and worked in the grain elevator with his father. They moved to the Carbondale community in 1961, where Vernon continued to farm and managed several grain elevators in the area. After his retirement, he worked as a custodian at Santa Fe Trail elementary and high schools. He attended the Carbondale Church of Christian Fellowship, Carbondale, Kansas, and he and Shirley were members of a local card club.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley Berkley, two sons, Ron (Shelly) Berkley, Lawrence, KS, and Royce (Christine) Berkley, Scranton, KS; a daughter, Renee (Shawn) Gideon, Paxico, KS; seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Sharon Berkley, and a grandson Garen Gideon.

Cremation is planned. Inurnment in Maple Hill Cemetery will be at a later date. A Celebration of His Life will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 27, 2010, at the Carbondale Church of Christian Fellowship. Family visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Church. The family asks that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Children's Christian Education Fund of the Carbondale Church of Christian Fellowship, the Opsoclonus-myoclonus Syndrome Research, to benefit Carter Berkley, or the Garen Gideon Memorial Scholarship Fund, and sent c/o Carey Funeral Home, P.O.
