NOMI BORGEN REMLER MADSEN On the evening of July 24, 2016, Nomi passed away peacefully of natural causes. Nomi was being visited and comforted by friends at the Fortuna Wellness and Rehabilitation Center in Fortuna, CA. She was 88 years old. Nomi was born in the town of Esbjerg, Denmark on July 20, 1928. She was the second child and the only daughter of Anna-Elisabeth and Reinhold Borgen Remler. She grew up attending school and helping in her parents' grocery store. She also endured the period of World War II when her town was occupied by the Nazis. After finishing school Nomi worked in a bakery and this is where she met her future husband, Svend Madsen, who worked as a skilled baker in the same bakery. Svend and Nomi were married in 1948 and within a few years were running their own successful bakery until they decided to sell and immigrate to the United States which they did in the summer of 1959. After a short time in Solvang, Nomi and Svend moved to Ferndale where they made a home and both worked for Primo Marca in his bakery on Main Street. They gained many friends, became US citizens, and eventually purchased the bakery and made it their own. Nomi was an intelligent business woman who knew the value of hard work and together with Svend's skills as a master baker their bakery was a success until they chose to sell and retire. Nomi enjoyed knitting, playing tennis and cards, travelling the world, reading, and all things Danish. She made regular trips back to visit her family in Denmark. As recently as two years ago she was swimming on Maui. Never one to miss a Sunday dinner, Nomi often arrived with a scrumptious homemade dessert. Her love of life and strong spirit will be greatly missed. Nomi was preceded in death by her parents, her older brother, Erling, and her husband, Svend. She will be missed by her loving brother, Flemming Remler and family and her special friends: Connie Butterfield, Chris Hill, and Carol DelBiaggio. A big thank you to George Borges and Maria Rosa who helped Nomi in many ways over the years. Thank you to Dr. Tamara Dennis and staff at Ferndale Community Health for their loving care and support. A remembrance and celebration of life will be held on Sunday, August 7th, from 2-5 p.m. at the Ferndale Town Hall with coffee and cake.
